How Evolution has continued its journey into online slots

It’s practically impossible to have played at an online casino without having come across the name ‘Evolution’. Of course, not so long ago the company was known as Evolution Gaming and this name change seemed to coincide with the company branching out into new territory. Read more about Evolution Online Slots.

The Evolution that we all know and love is famed for its live casino games. In fact, that’s all that Evolution ever did. Its focus on this area, without straying elsewhere, meant that it soon become the premier developer in the live game arena.

What Evolution offered wasn’t all of the popular games that you’d expect to find at a land-based casino. The likes of blackjack, roulette, and baccarat were all covered but added into the mix, there appeared new titles that had an almost gameshow-type feel to them.

While the company continued to excel in this area, one thing that no one ever really expected was for Evolution to throw its hat into the ring and start to offer slots. However, there was no way that Evolution was going to start from scratch. Instead, it ensured that it got the very best start possible.

NetEnt - Evolution Online Slots

2020 and the acquisition of NetEnt – Evolution Online Slots

Now, if you want to be taken seriously as a developer offering slots, then you need to have a pretty impressive games catalogue. Of course, this would’ve taken years for Evolution to build and so it did the next best thing: it went and bought the best in the business. By acquiring NetEnt, Evolution instantly had a catalogue of slots and other casino games that saw it become the envy of its rivals.

When you look at NetEnt classics, such as Dead or Alive, Gonzo’s Quest, and Starburst, these aren’t the kind of slots that you can develop overnight. Instead, Evolution now owned each and every title and positioned itself as one of the strongest game developers around.

As well as dominating the live dealer arena, Evolution suddenly found itself as the best when it came to first-person RNG titles as well as slots. While other developers had been working in the background in an attempt to rival all that Evolution has to offer in terms of live games, now Evolution has become the dominant force in all things online casino related.

The turn of Big Time Gaming – Evolution Online Slots

If snapping up the entirely of NetEnts back catalogue wasn’t enough, just a year later Evolution was eyeing up yet another developer. This time it was the turn of Big Time Gaming. While Evolution already had plenty to offer in terms of slots, thanks to its NetEnt titles, what Big Time Gaming had to offer was something a little different,

By acquiring Big Time Gaming, Evolution found itself with the whole Megaways catalogue. For those who are unfamiliar, Megaways slots work a little differently from standard ones. They each come with 6 reels and the number of symbols changes on each spin. What this means is that the ways that you can win change with every spin.

Titles such as Bonanza Megawways, Apollo Pays, Vegas Megaways, and Stargate Megaways now fall under the umbrella of Evolution. These are titles that create huge excitement for players. Why? Well, with a traditional slot you’ll probably find that there are a handful of ways that you can win. When it comes to Megaways titles, there are often over 200,000 different ways to win. This adds a whole new dimension to slots and this means that Evolution now has something to offer that competitors can’t come close to matching.

2022 and the march towards dominance continues

When it came to Evolution’s decision to purchase Big Time Gaming, it was all about business sense. Big Time Gaming has been performing exceptionally well and it made perfect sense to try and snap this developer up and make it part of the wider Evolution family. This business-based decision provided the same thinking for what happened in June of this year when Evolution agreed to pay a whopping $357 million for the developer Nolimit City.

When looking at how Nolimit was performing, it was widely anticipated that the company would generate around $30 million this year alone. This meant that the actual earnings are set to be around the $23 million mark and that kind of profit means that Nolimit City is a welcome addition to the Evolution family.

So, apart from the impressive profit potential, what else did Evolution see that led to it setting its sights on Nolimit City? Well, Evolution is clear with its aim. The overall plan for Evolution is for it to become the top casino game provider across the world. What Nolimit City brought to the party was an innovative selection of slots that no one else can offer.

So, how is Evolution performing?

It has to be said that Evolution’s aims are a little on the grand side. To get anywhere near achieving this, it takes something of a gamble and gamble is something that Evolution has certainly done. Okay, so the recent acquisitions have all been based on sound business cases, but Evolution has spent big and that means that it now needs to start seeing some returns.

The issue facing Evolution right now is that earnings from slots have been a little on the slow side. That’s not to say that they haven’t been profitable, but they’ve hardly set the world alight right now. Evolution, somehow, needs to push these titles but it needs to realise that it faces stiff competition from the likes of Playtech and Microgaming.

The good news for Evolution is that its live games are still performing amazingly well. The first quarter of this year saw revenue from these games increase by an impressive 44.3%. Alongside this, RNG games have also seen good growth with an increase of 19.3%.

Evolution continues to do well where Evolution has always done well – live games. Its venture into online slots is a long-term project but it is one that needs to start paying.
