How players try to cheat at blackjack

There are players out there who get so wrapped up in their game of blackjack that they decide to cheat. While we’re all looking for a win from our favorite casino game, these are people who have gone a little too far. They’ve lost sight of the fun that blackjack has to offer and they become increasingly obsessed with the money, and the feeling of a win. Read more about cheating at Blackjack.

The thing is, casinos are switched on to practically every form of cheating out there. They have croupiers (plus a whole host of security) who are trained to spot any irregularities and to identify any cheats. These cheats can be sure of facing a ban and being left with nowhere to play.

The thing is, the majority of these cheats are less than subtle: they get spotted in an instant and their night comes to a premature end. Want to know what tricks they’re trying? Then let’s take a look.

Cheating at Blackjack

First things first – card counting isn’t cheating at Blackjack

When it comes to any discussion around blackjack and cheating, the subject of card counting is one that always comes up. Contrary to what you may read elsewhere, card counting isn’t a form of cheating. In fact, it’s actually a skill, and the optimal blackjack strategy, that’s used by some of the very best blackjack players. So, why do so many people assume that it’s cheating?

The truth of the matter is that casinos (both land based and online casinos) don’t like anything that gives players an extra edge. In simple terms, card counting works and so casinos don’t want you to do it. It’s not illegal and it’s not cheating. It’s just something that casinos detest because it allows you to win more often. The consequences of card counting, however, are similar to those that cheats face in that you’ll be asked to leave, and you may even be banned.u

So, what do we mean by cheating at Blackjack?

Those who cheat at blackjack are no different to those who cheat in other areas of their lives. Ultimately what cheating comes down to are dishonesty and outright lying. When you apply this to blackjack or any casino game, it means that players are trying to disguise the truth and trying to have on over the dealer.

So, you may be wondering exactly what these acts and lies are. Our only hope is that you’re not looking for ways to replicate these. Why? Well, for one no one likes a cheat and for another, there is very little doubt that you’ll get caught. Still want to know just how people try and cheat? Well here’s a look at just five of the ways:

1) The wrong chip

You’ll find that players often get into a bit of a routine when they’re playing blackjack. You’ll watch them as they place the same bet throughout the evening and you can be sure that it doesn’t alter. That’s until the night is wearing on and they suddenly find themselves down for the evening. When this happens, players try and subtly change their bets to mitigate their losses. A good croupier will spot this and check with the player that their bet is correct. Why? Well, that’s because you can guarantee that if the player wins they’ll swear blind that this was a mistake and that they’d meant to place their usual bet!

2) The claim that they didn’t want to hit

This is probably one of the most outright ways of cheating that exists. Players will look at their hand and then decide to hit. They’ll either use hand signals or just verbally ask. They’ll then be dealt a card that makes them go bust and at this point, they swear blind that they never wanted a card and they’ll demand that the dealer take it back. It may sound a little far-fetched but there are plenty of people who actually give this a try.

3) They didn’t want to stand

The complete opposite of the above but just as blatant and wholly disrespectful. Let’s say that a player has 17. Of course, they probably don’t want to take another card with this total so they choose to stand. That’s all well and good but when the dealer has a 10, and then suddenly produces an Ace, giving them a blackjack, the player will insist that they had wanted a card and that the dealer must have misunderstood.

4) They wanted to double all along

There are plenty of players who ask for a card and then find that it happens to be a good one. When they see just how good the card is the claim is that they had clearly stated that they’d wanted to double their initial bet. now, of course, they’d never given any indication that was the case. They’d simply seen the card and thought that they’d take their chances with a lie!

5) Lying about the min and max bets

Something else that players will try is to deliberately bet under or over the minimum allowed. They think that a dealer won’t notice that they’ve bet too little and then when they lose their hand, they’ll claim that the bet can’t possibly stand because they hadn’t bet the minimum. They will then demand their money back. Those who bet over the maximum and then go on to lose will kick and scream demanding the difference back.

Final thoughts on cheating at Blackjack

Some of these attempts at cheating are a little brazen, to say the least. The sad truth is that there are plenty of players out there willing to give it a go. As we see things, yes we get the desire to win but lowering yourself to this level just isn’t okay.

Remember what blackjack and gambling are all about. They’re fun activities and they offer a great night out. Don’t bring yours to an end by taking your chances with deceiving the house: the reality is that your time will come and you’ll be ejected at speed!
