Playtech vs Evolution

A look at Playtech

When looking at the history of these companies, Playtech is the older of the two. Back in 1999, it was founded by Teddy Sagi, an Israeli entrepreneur, along with others with expertise in the casino industry. It was only around 5 years before this that online casinos had started to appear. Playtech jumped on board with ease and was soon creating great games for a whole host of different operators.

Playtech offered its first live dealer games back in 2003. One point worth noting here is that this was before Evolution even existed. This all started with just blackjack and roulette being offered. Games would run just a few hours per day. This grew over the years with more and more games being added and 24/7 live streaming.

Over the years Playtech has won numerous awards. With its headquarters in the Isle of Man, it has also expanded by acquiring numerous other gaming companies.

A look at Evolution

Evolution was born in 2006. The Sweden-based company was founded by Jens Von Bahr and Fredrik Österberg. What was different with Evolution from the very start was that the company decided to focus solely on live casino games. They did from the very start and this is where its focus has remained. It was 2007 when the company first signed contracts with operators and it has continued to grow ever since.

Evolution’s first studio was in Riga, the capital of Latvia. In just 3 short years its size was quadrupled. Later, Evolution outgrew its studio again and had to find larger premises.

Evolution is known as a true innovator. It is also respected within the industry for the excellent quality of all of its games. There is no dispute that Evolution excels, and this is evidenced by the host of awards that it’s won.

Evolution vs Playtech: The major differences

There is one really major difference when it comes to comparing these developers. That is that Evolution only produces live dealer games whereas Playtech does this alongside other games. Away from the live games, Playtech has well over 500 other titles and this makes live dealer games only a small proportion of its portfolio. Playtech’s other games are things such as slots and random number generator versions of blackjack, poker, and roulette. It even has software that covers sports betting.

The fact that Playtech offers an array of other games means that it is, by far, the bigger of the two companies. When you take a look at the revenue that these two giants produce, Playtech is the runaway winner with around $600 million more than Evolution. Something else that has helped Playtech grow its revenue is the fact that it now has a studio in the Philippines. This has led to it taking over the Asian market and tapping into new revenue streams.

Evolution vs Playtech: The studios

Evolution still has a studio located in Riga, where it all began. This is the company’s biggest studio and, along with Malta, is the main base of operation. This studio is home to over 100 tables and, over time, new studios have been created in Malta, Spain, Belgium, Romania, and Georgia. The most recent addition has been its new studio in Canada.

Evolution’s Malta studio sees a great deal of localised tables. These are tables where native speakers cater for specific countries. This means that Evolution can offer games that are very much focused on a single country that speaks a certain language.

Playtech purchased its 8,500 square meter studio back in 2017. It’s probably no coincidence that, just like Evolution’s, this studio is based in Riga. The company also has additional studios in locations such as Belgium, Spain, the Philippines, and Romania.

Both companies react when it comes to new studios. If countries adopt casino-friendly laws, this makes them ideal locations. as laws become more relaxed, you can be sure that both Playtech and Evolution will be creating studios in other places around the world.

Evolution vs Playtech: The games

It’s often hard to stay on top of exactly how many games Evolution and Playtech have to offer. that’s because they’re adding to them on a regular basis. You’ll find that both offer a wide range of variants of blackjack, poker, roulette, and baccarat. There are also games that are based on game shows. This is perhaps where the big difference comes in.

While Evolution likes to innovate, Playtech remains more traditional. The former releases completely unique games, whereas the latter focuses on new variants of old classics. Both have versions of games that are exclusive and both are loved the world over.

Evolution vs Playtech: The winner

While Playtech is the biggest company in terms of size and revenue, there is just something about games from Evolution. The Playtech live casino experience is certainly one to be enjoyed, but the way in which Evolution innovates and pushes boundaries gives it the edge.

While Evolution has come up trumps, the truth is that we’d happily play games from either of these operators. They are, indeed, the giants in the industry.
