Could 2023 be the year that online casinos come to Indiana?

It’s always good news when we learn that online casinos are spreading across the US. As it stands right now, these aren’t legal in Indiana but the hope is that 2023 will signal a change. Those in the state will be well aware of the fact that an attempt to legalize online casinos failed only last year, but that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. The biggest supporter of Indiana online casinos, Rep. Ethan Manning, has already let it be known that he intends to try again in 2023.

Manning is also looking to add iLottery to legal activities in the state. The hope is that this would help to get Gov. Eric Holcomb on board. Online gambling already has its place in Indiana and the hope is that online casinos will soon be a part.

What’s happening in Indiana right now?

To see where we’re up to right now, it’s worth taking a look back at what happened in November 2002 and where that has led us today:

  • November 9th 2022  – Manning and State Senator Jon Ford are reelected. This is great news for those who support online casinos
  • December 15th 2022 – Manning is appointed chairman of the House Public Policy Committee. this saw the removal of Ben Smaltz, who was entirely against online casinos
  • January 12th 2023 – Manning submits HB1536 in a bid to bring online casinos to Indiana. The aim is to have the first sites live by September 2023
  • January 27th 2023 – It is made clear that online casinos would benefit responsible gambling efforts in the state.  The bill states that 10% of tax revenue would be sent to these services and that would be worth around $20 million per year
  • February 2nd 2023 – The state government revisits its forecasts for online casino revenue. The new figure is set at $812 million
  • February 7th 2023 – arguments rage around the harm that online casinos could cause to land-based establishments

What can players in Indiana enjoy at the moment?

Just like other states that don’t allow for full online casinos, players in Indiana can play at sweepstake casinos as well as social casinos. These types of casinos operate in ways that allow them to follow the laws of the state. Some of the games on offer include:

The reason that these games can be played is down to the fact that sweepstake casinos allow people to play for free. The setup means that payments aren’t a requirement to get involved and so this makes them perfectly legal.

How about land-based casinos in Indiana?

While the residents of Indiana are waiting for online casinos to be given the go-ahead, they can at least be satisfied with the number of land-based establishments that exist. You won’t come across a single area where there are numerous casinos clustered together, but if you’re willing to go through the state, you’ll find that there are plenty to choose from.

These casinos offer a wide range of games of chance for players to choose from. As well as these, almost all of the casinos also offer a poker room and a sportsbook. Something that all of the casinos have in common is that they’re open 24 hours a day. That means there is the ability to play whenever you choose to.

What can I bet on in Indiana?

What makes Indiana a little odd, in terms of gambling, are the contrasts that exist. There are so many casinos and horse tracks to choose from that you’d think this was a state that was 100% pro-gambling. Add to this the fact that it was also one of the first states to allow daily fantasy sports and you’d be forgiven for thinking that all gambling activities had the green light. However, that’s not the case.

Unless a gambling activity is expressly permitted by law then it can get you into a bit of trouble. In fact, going ahead and taking part in online gambling can lead to a $1,000 fine along with 180 days in jail. We’re sure you’d rather avoid this, so here’s a look at what is, and isn’t allowed:

Indiana online casinos – Online sportsbooks

Online sports betting has been allowed in Indiana since 2019. There are now over a dozen online sportsbooks to choose from but, to be legal, an operator must be listed on the Indiana Gaming Commission site. There are also plenty of in-person sportsbooks to choose from.

Indiana online casinos – Lottery games

Indiana has a state lottery that residents are able to take part in. Lottery tickets first became available back in 1989 and these have been hugely popular ever since. Players in Indiana can take part in the state lottery and can also take part in a multi-state one too.

Indiana online casinos – Poker

There are 10 poker rooms in Indiana so it’s fair to say that this game isn’t a big no. However, playing poker online is a different matter, for now. As it stands, residents of Indiana are limited to Global Poker. This is a sweepstakes poker site and that’s what makes it legal here and in practically every other US state.

Indiana online casinos – Horse racing

You’ll find two horse tracks in Indiana and these allow those visiting to place bets on the races. The good news is that you can also head online and legally bet on this sport.

Why online casinos will be a boost to the state

Gambling is already a big earner for the state and brings plenty of tax dollars in. As it stands right now, the gambling industry is worth over $1 billion every year to Indiana, and this would only increase if online casinos were given the green light.

When there is so much money on the table, it’s hard to believe that the state will walk away from the opportunity that it now has. All being well, 2023 will be the year when online casinos become legal and can be enjoyed in Indiana.
