New casinos set for Virginia

Times are getting a little exciting for those in Virginia. For anyone looking to enjoy blackjack or any other casino games, there’ll soon be four locations to choose from. As it stands right now, Virginia is served by a single temporary. With so much more to come in new Virginia casinos, residents certainly have a great deal to look forward to.

Some may be wondering if Virginia really needs more casinos, but it’s fair to say that there certainly appears to be sufficient demand. The first full-time temporary casino opened in the summer and people queued for well over an hour to have the opportunity to enter and enjoy the games that are on offer.

Those behind the temporary casino have certainly got things right and this has, no doubt, led to locals being more than happy to welcome more casinos. That’s because this temporary casino has far more to offer than many permanent ones that have been seen. With 870 slots and 21 table games, there’s certainly plenty to keep players entertained.

What’s planned right now is going to lead to four Las Vegas-style casinos which will all open over the next year or two. With Portsmouth’s casino set to open in 2023, those in Bristol, Danville and Norfolk will be up and running the following year.

Rumor has it that there could soon be even more casinos coming this way, but for now, let’s explore the ones that we know have been confirmed.

A look at Virginia’s gaming laws

It was back in 2019 that a new casino gaming law was passed. This was passed by the state general assembly and later signed by the governor. It was then in November 2020 that election voters gave the green light to go ahead and construct casinos in Bristol, Danville, Norfolk and Portsmouth.

Games that are classed as casino games include:

  • Baccarat
  • Blackjack
  • Twenty-one
  • Poker
  • Craps
  • Dice
  • Slots
  • Sports betting
  • Roulette

When it comes to minimum gambling ages, these are:

  • 21 for casinos
  • 18 for poker
  • 18 for bingo
  • 21 for sports betting
  • 18 for horse racing

New Virginia casinos – A look at River Casino Portsmouth

This casino is currently under construction and, when it opens next year, it will become the first full-time and full-service casino in Virginia. The plans right now are that doors will open during the first quarter of 2023, so January, February or March.

The gaming floor is being described as state-of-the-art and is set to span an impressive 450,000 square feet. If you wondering why such a vast amount of space is needed, it could have something to do with the 2,500 slot machines that are due to be installed. Alongside these, there will also be a great selection of table games as well as a poker room. The plans also include a separate area for high-limit games and a sports betting lounge too.

When it comes to the table games, the intention is to include the likes of craps, baccarat, roulette and blackjack. This means that all casino fans are pretty much catered for and there’ll be plenty going on for all types of casino fans.

New Virginia casinos – Hard Rock Bristol

As it stands, the temporary casino in Bristol is already fairly impressive. It already comes with 870 slots and 21 table games. If that weren’t enough, it also features a Hard Rock sportsbook for gambling fans. Add to this the fact that there are three restaurants and live music, what is on offer here as a temporary casino, is downright phenomenal.

It looks like there is so much more to come when the permanent casino opens its doors in the summer of 2024. With a budget of $400 million, we can expect some great finishing touches to go along with a fantastic selection of games.

Talking of games, the 90,000 square foot floor is set to include 2,700 slots as well as an impressive 100 table games. There is also set to be a 25,000-square-foot sportsbook.

The Hard Rock casino will be completed with the addition of a 750-room hotel which will include a spa and fitness centre. Add to this the indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, and this casino looks set to impress.

New Virginia casinos – Caesars Virginia

Caesars is currently under construction in Danville. While the casino here isn’t set to open until 2024, there are plans in place to offer something for those who just can’t wait. This is in the form of a temporary casino that’s set to open in 2023.

When the permanent casino opens, you can be sure that’ll it will be well worth a visit. It’s set to include a state-of-the-art casino floor along with a sportsbook and even a World Series Poker room. The gaming floor is set to be impressive with some 1,400 slots, 85 live table games and 24 electronic table games. The separate poker room is set to feature 25 tables.

With a budget of $500 million, it seems that Caesars is looking to impress. The casino is set to be complimented by a 500-room hotel and this will feature a pool, spa and fitness centre. Casinos like this are set to make Virginia the go-to place for a great playing experience.

Headwater Resort and Casino

Headwater will be in Norfolk and the doors will open in 2024. That being said, 2023 will lead to a temporary casino being opened.

The permanent casino is set to be huge. Set on 13 acres of land, the casino floor is reportedly set to feature a whopping 3,000 slots and an impressive 150 table games. A gaming floor of this size will surely impress and it almost rivals some online casinos in terms of the number of casino games available.

The resort here will also see a hotel with 300 rooms that’ll feature a spa and even a rooftop pool. It’s fair to say that those in Virginia certainly have a great deal to look forward to over the next two years.
